The victory takes Burundi to the top of Group A

Seleman Ndikumana hit a brace to help Burundi overcome Somalia 3-0 in Group A of the Cecafa Cup in Dar-es-Salaam on Monday.

Aime Nzohabonayo opened the scoring on 18 minutes when he powered a header into the corner of the net.

The Somalis, who have several foreign-based players in their squad, improved their game but Abdiziz Ali and Abdi Wahid failed to convert good scoring chances.

They were punished for being profligate in the 77th minute when Ndikumana fired home from outside the box after being set up by Jean Paul Habrugika.

The striker extended Rwanda's lead five minutes later after outwitting two Somali defenders before shooting past goalkeeper Abdilkadi Sheikh Othman.

Despite the defeat, Somalia coach Daal Mohgammed Ali was happy with the performance of his team.

"It was a good match for us, we lost because we couldn't convert our chances, but I am happy," Ali said.

The tournament continues on Tuesday with two Group B matches.

Uganda will face their regional arch-rivals Rwanda while Eritrea play their horn of Africa neighbours Djibouti in Dar es Salaam.

Rwanda have summoned their Sweden-based striker Olivier Karekezi to help them win the game.
