Mido may not be fit to help Egypt in their defence of the Nations Cup |
Egypt striker Mido will have to make a speedy recovery from a groin injury if he is to play at the Nations Cup finals. Mido has been out of action for a month already, and his English Premier league club Middlesbrough is unable to give an expected return date.
But Middlesbrough coach Gareth Southgate told the club's official website that Mido is unlikely to play until January.
The Nations Cup gets underway on 20 January in Ghana.
"We were recommended to try a course of injections, but unfortunately these have failed to improve his symptoms," said Southgate.
"On the advice of specialists, we have therefore decided that the best course of action is for Mido to have a period of rest and rehabilitation.
"Due to the nature of the injury, it is very difficult to put a timescale on it, but what Mido needs to do now is rest from playing football or training with the team.
"But the most important thing is that we resolve the problem, even if unfortunately it takes longer than we would like."
Egypt were far from impressive in their qualifying campaign for the Nations Cup finals, and Mido's presence in the team will be important as the Pharaohs defend their title.
