SuperSport hope to bring african club football to a wider audience |
SuperSport International has signed yet another sponsorship deal in its bid for television sports supremacy in Africa.
The South Africa-based media company agreed to sponsor the Kenya Premier League (KPL) to the tune of $5.5 million over 4 years.
This follows a $2.7 million sponsorship deal with Zambia announced last week.
This deal is a huge boost for Kenyan football and is KPL's first ever sponsorship deal.
It ushers in a new era in the 44-year history of Kenyan football which for the last five years has been embroiled in a power struggle, at times forcing Fifa to intervene.
SuperSport say they were attracted to the KPL because of the competitiveness of the league.
"Last weekend they completed one of the best-managed and most highly competitive leagues in Kenya," Andre Venter, SuperSport Director of Operations, said.
"Over half the clubs were still competing for the title or to avoid relegation on the last day of the seaon."
SuperSport International are currently in a tussle for African television sport domination alongside Gateway TV (GTV).
The London-based media company have recently signed deals with Cecafa (the football governing body for Central and East Africa) and the Football Associations of Tanzania and Uganda.
