Al Ahly of Egypt could face sanctions after Caf announced an investigation into the ugly scenes which marred the second leg of the Champions League final.

Sections of the Ahly crowd reacted furiously to the manner of their side's 3-1 defeat to Tunisia's Etoile du Sahel in Cairo on Friday.

Full bottles of water and other missiles were thrown at the players as they made their way up and down from the tribune where they received their medals after the game.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was on hand to present the trophy, and had a clear view of violence.

Many of the attacks came from people sitting in the most expensive seats in the stadium, just in front of the Presidential box.

Players were targeted from just a few metres away, but the heavy security and police presence did nothing to prevent the assaults.

Some Egyptian journalists joined in the attacks, before being pulled away by their colleagues.

Caf's Director of Communications, Suleiman Habuba, told BBC Sport that the match commissioner and match co-ordinator had both submitted reports to the governing body.
