Asec have dominated Ivorian football for years |
ASEC Mimosas are celebrating a 15th Ivorian cup win, thanks to a sensational performance from a rising new star. Serges Deble, a youngster from the fabled ASEC academy, came off the bench to score a hat-trick in extra time on Sunday.
His goals allowed ASEC to fight off a determined Issia Wazia team.
Issia had the best chance in the first half but Ibrahima Diakite was unable to beat the ASEC keeper Bernard Kouassi.
The team, from a small town in the interior, were cheered on by the all-powerful Minister of Planning, Paul Bohoun Bouabre.
Their opponents ASEC improved in the second half, but couldn't score.
But the reigning Ivorian champions came alive in the extra periods, thanks largely to young Deble.
The striker was too hot to handle for the tiring Issia defenders, notching three goals.
The concluding strike showed all his class, as he rounded the goalkeeper and tucked the ball home.
Deble has made a number of appearances for ASEC this season, mainly as a substitute, but it is the first time he has really shone at senior level.
Earlier this season the youngster told BBC Sport he was determined to follow in the footsteps of his idol, Didier Drogba, and earn a move to a big European club.
A cup final hat-trick, the stuff dreams are made off, can only have boosted his chances.
