South Africa face Cosafa action

South Africa
Parreira named a home-based squad for Saturday's game against Botswana

South Africa face potential embarrassment and a heavy fine for not fielding a team for Saturday's Cosafa Cup semi final tie against Botswana.

Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has stood firm in saying he will not make any changes to his home-based 21-man squad for the home game in Atteridgeville.

Ajax Cape Town, Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic have warned that they will withdraw their players so they can play in a lucrative local tournament which gets underway on Wednesday and continues over the weekend.

With the three teams supplying a combined total of ten members of the squad, Parreira could be left with only 11 players including only one goalkeeper.

An incensed Parreira stood his ground saying he won't change his squad due to the clubs' unwillingness to their release players.

"This is not my problem but the country's and we cannot go on like this," Parreira said.

"There was an agreement to release players but now people don't want to and there is nothing I can do. I have never had a situation like this in Brazil."

Cosafa administrative secretary, Ashford Mamelodi has warned Safa it faces a severe financial penalty if they fail to honour the fixture against Botswana.

The game is part of a double header also involving Zambia and Mozambique who play in the other semi final.

"Teams have invested time and money in preparation. Everything from flights and accommodation have been booked and we cannot cancel now," Mamelodi said.

"I hope the South African team is available because it will affect the tournament if the hosts pull out."

Bafana Bafana team manager Sipho Nkumane said they would decide their course of action on Wednesday.

"We will see who turns up at the camp on Wednesday. If we don't have enough players we simply can't play," he said.

A meeting between Safa and the Premier Soccer League has been called for Wednesday in an effort to reach a compromise.

However, given the short period of time and the fact that television schedules for this weekend's Telkom Knockout had already been confirmed, it's hard to see the games being postponed.
