Anichebe commits to Nigeria

Everton striker Victor Anichebe wants to play for Nigeria
Everton striker Victor Anichebe will play for Nigeria after rejecting a place in the England under-21 squad.

He said: "I got called by England last week but I don't really want to play for them - I want to play for Nigeria.

"(England under-21 manager) Stuart Pearce had a chat with me and gave me his opinion.

"I took it on board but I feel Nigeria is better for me."

Anichebe will now likely make his debut for Nigeria in Saturday's African Cup of Nations qualifier against Lesotho.

The 19-year-old Anichebe was born in Lagos, Nigeria, but moved to England when he was a baby.

Anichebe's international career has been in doubt for some time.

In 2006, he withdrew from an England under-19 squad.

Later, he was called up to Nigeria's under-20s, but failed to attend its training camp.

Anichebe has scored six goals in 31 Everton appearances, 21 as a substitute.
