The Group 9 African Cup of Nations qualifiers have been rescheduled |
Elections in Sierra Leone have forced the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to reschedule all remaining Group 9 qualifiers for the 2008 African Nations Cup. Both games will now take place on 14 October - an official international date in the Fifa calendar.
Sierra Leone's presidential elections will be taking place on 8 September, the same day Caf had initially scheduled the group matches to be played simultaneously.
According to the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), due to the elections, the government could not guarantee security when the national team host Benin.
The Squirrels of Benin are third in the group with eight points, while leaders Mali are equal top on nine points with Togo.
If Benin could win in Freetown, their hopes of qualifying will depend on a draw in the game in Lome.
Sierra Leone are already out of the race with just one point.
Previously, Caf had also rescheduled the games of Group 2 to take place on the weekend of 12 October when Egypt host Botswana and Mauritania entertain Burundi in Nouakchott.
Each group will have their final qualifying matches taking place at the same time to decide which of 15 teams will join hosts Ghana at the Nations Cup tournament.
