Jon Obi Mikel's apology has fallen short of Berti Vogts' expectations
Nigeria's Jon Mikel Obi has written a letter apologising for his "indiscipline" to the Nigeria Football Association.

However this has not gone down well with German coach Berti Vogts who has demanded the player apologises to all his team-mates for his lackadaisical attitude towards the Super Eagles.

Vogts said midfielder John Mikel Obi will have to be more committed if he is to return to the international fold.

"I need all my best players and I am ready to accept his apologies if he can also spread it to his team-mates," says Berti Vogts.

"We called a meeting in London, but he failed to show up. We invited him to Kenya and Uganda; and again he refused to get back to us.

"If he is to play for the team, he must show commitment, discipline and total respect.

'Apology'

"If not, I will not call him up to the team," the German said.

The Nigeria FA says they have settled their differences with the Chelsea star but maintain that his international future lies in the hands of the coach.

"We received a letter of apology from Mikel on 6 August, which we felt was appropriate," NFA spokesman Ademola Olajire told BBC Sport.

"But whether that is enough to earn him a recall solely depends on Berti Vogts and Samson Siasia [the under-23 coach].

"Vogts is not satisfied with the letter and expects more from him.

'Suspended'

"It is now up to Mikel, if he would heed Berti's advice of extending his apology to the Super Eagles players."

The 20-year-old was suspended by the NFA when he pulled out injured from a Cup of Nations qualifier against Uganda in June.

A club-versus-country row erupted between English side Chelsea and Nigeria over the nature of the injury.

The London-based club were accused of failing to release the midfielder for an independent medical assessment.

Mikel's failure to turn up in Uganda led Berti Vogts to drop the player from the Nations Cup side that defeated Niger 3-1 two months ago.
