Gabon still have a slim chance of qualifying for the Nations Cup finals |
Gabon beat their hosts Madagascar 2-0 to keep alive their faint hopes of reaching the African Cup of Nations finals in Ghana next year. The opening goal of the Group One encounter was scored after 20 minutes by Georges Akiremy Owondo, who headed in from six yards.
Substitute Elvis Eva-Kedi sealed the victory with a goal in the final minutes of the game.
Gabon remain second in the three-team group three points behind leaders the Ivory Coast, who did not play this weekend.
In order to win the group and qualify for the finals Gabon need a 6-0 win over the Ivory Coast in the final qualifying game in September.
That result would give both sides nine points, but Gabon would win the group thanks to a better head-to-head record between the two sides.
The game was the final qualifier for Madagascar who end their four-match campaign without a single point or a single goal.
