Egypt's Mohamed Zidan is set to become a Hamburg player |
Egyptian international Mohamed Zidan has completed his move to Bundesliga side Hamburg from their relegated German rivals Mainz 05 in a deal worth US$6.7m. The deal went ahead despite the fact the 25-year-old's medical at Hamburg discovered a persistent groin problem which needs another operation.
The striker is a proven goal-scorer having netted 13 goals for Mainz in just 15 games after switching from Werder Bremen midway through the season and will be able to train with his new club when pre-season training starts.
"I'm really looking forward to playing for Hamburg, they are moving in the right direction," said Zidan.
Hamburg's sports director Dietmar Beiersdorfer said: "He is the player that we really wanted."
Zidan's acquisition was agreed upon at a special meeting of Hamburg's board, which has to approve decisions by the club's management after several expensive transfers last season backfired.
Hamburg finished seventh in the Bundesliga only after a late surge ended the danger of relegation.
