Wafu nets sponsorship deal

Amos Adamu has negotiated a US$4m sponsorship deal for Wafu

One of the factions in the struggle for the leadership of the West African Football Union (Wafu) has announced a US$4m sponsorship deal.

The faction headed by Nigerian Amos Adamu has signed a deal with telecommunication company Globacom.

Adamu's election as the president of Wafu in Accra in April is being contested by the Ivory Coast's Jacques Anouma, who was given a vote of confidence at separate meeting in Abidjan.

The Confederation of African Football seem to be backing Adamu after they sent an observer to the elections in Accra that saw the Nigerian named as president.

But Adamu denies any split in Wafu: "We don't have factions in Wafu as we are moving to ensure other countries who could not make it here come down for our next meeting."

Despite the confusion surrounding his leadership, Adamu has attracted Globacom as well as Nigerian banks, Oceanic and Spring, as he attempts to re-brand Wafu.

"This is a landmark for Wafu and we know countries in our region will benefit immensely from this," Adamu told BBC Sport.

"The perennial problems of Wafu have been sponsorship and achieving this feat in just three weeks in office is indeed historical."

Patron of former African champions Enyimba Orji Uzor Kalu also donated a trophy for the next Wafu championship.

He also promised to foot all expenses incurred by organisers during the competition.

Despite claiming to have the support of 13 of the 16 member nations just 11 showed up in Lagos, Caf and Fifa member Alhaji Amadou Diakite also attended.
