The Nigerian Football League (NFL) are refusing to confirm reports that three people died when angry fans went on the rampage during a Nigerian league game between Akwa United and Enyimba on Sunday. Some reports claim that three fans were shot during the crowd trouble, that was sparked when referee Felicia Okwugba awarded Enyimba a penalty in the dying minutes of the game that Akwa United were leading 2-1.
The fans apparently attacked the referee forcing the police to intervene - there are conflicting reports as to whether the police fired just tear gas or if some live ammunition was also used.
The trouble then spilled out on the streets around the stadium as supporters then set fire to several vehicles parked outside and clashed with police.
The Executive Secretary of the NFL Salisu Abubaker said: "I can't confirm any deaths as we have not recieved the report from the police and the security agencies.
"The police did a good job to contain the situation it was just unfortunate that it spilt onto the streets.
"I know the police fired a lot of tear gas, but I'm not aware of the firing of any live bullets during the game as it is a requirement that they do not enter the stadium with live ammunition.
"However something may have happened outside the stadium."
The NFL has since set up a special three-man probe panel to fully investigate the fracas.
