NFA unaware of Vogts' assistant
Berti Vogts
Vogts signed a three-and-a-half year contract to coach Nigeria

Nigeria Football Association (NFA) officials say they are unaware of the appointment of Thomas Haessler as the assistant coach of the national team.

Super Eagles' German coach Berti Vogts named his compatriot as his assistant on Saturday, casting a doubt over the future of local coach Austin Eguavoen.

However, Eguavoen says he has no qualms about the former Germany international's appointment.

NFA Secretary General, Bolaji Ojo-Oba, said: "The only thing we know is that we have employed Vogts.

"We don't know anything about the appointment of his assistant, Haessler. We only read about that in the newspapers.

"We had an agreement that whenever we are preparing for a competition, he could get some other coaches to assist him.

"So there is a great difference between employing an assistant for himself and getting some assistance whenever he is preparing for competitions."

Haessler is expected to work with the Super Eagles on a part-time basis as he will keep his job as the assistant coach of the German second division side Cologne.

Eguavoen, who has been in charge of the national team since July 2005, says he was aware of the engagement of a foreign assistant.

"I believe the appointment of Haessler is a good thing for Nigeria as we'll have strong depth in terms of managing a team like the Super Eagles," the former Nigeria international told BBC Sport.

"The appointment of another assistant doesn't bother me because everything (about Vogts' assistants) had been made clear from the outset.

"I have played under foreign managers in the national team and I know they worked collectively with the local coaches and a similar thing can be done."

Even though Eguavoen's contract with the national team is yet to be finalised he is confident the deal will be sealed by the end of the month.

"The contract issue should have been resolved in January but I am still waiting," Eguavoen said.

"I've been told it will be resolved before the end of the month, so we'll see."

Vogts, who signed a four-year deal to handle Nigeria in February, is due in the country next week.

His salaries will be paid by telephone company Globacom, one of the major sponsors of the NFA.
