Mixed Reaction
Berti Vogts
Nigeria appointed Vogts on Monday

The appointment of Germany's Berti Vogts as Nigeria coach has received a mixed reaction in the West African nation.

The former Germany, Kuwait and Scotland manager was named as the new man in charge of the Super Eagles earlier this week.

Officials say the 60-year-old, who won the World Cup as a player in 1974, is expected to sign a four-year contract in Abuja before the end of the month.

Yet former international John Fashanu believes the coach who masterminded Germany's 1996 European Championship triumph is not the right man to lead Nigeria.

"The choice of Vogts is a huge mistake because he does not have what it takes," said the former Nigeria Football Association (NFA) board member.

"You cannot employ someone who has continued to fail since 1997. He failed with Germany at the 1998 World Cup, and he failed with Scotland."

Another former Nigeria star, Segun Odegbami, was also far from impressed with Vogts' recent record, particularly his poor reign as Scotland coach between 2002 and 2004.

"His choice is not convincing because he did not enjoy a successful stint with Scotland," argued Odegbami.

During Vogts' tenure, Scotland failed to reach a major championship and the low point came when they could only draw with the tiny Faroe Islands in a European qualifier.

However, Christian Chukwu, a former Nigeria coach, praised the NFA for selecting Vogts.

"For the first time, we are going for a truly world-class coach," explained a man who was sacked in 2005 after failing to lead the Super Eagles to last year's World Cup.

"He played the game at the highest level and he also coached teams at the highest level.

"His experience will take Nigeria to the next level."
