Sonko was born in Senegal but grew up in France |
Defender Ibrahima Sonko has urged France to hurry up and call him into their international squad - or he will turn out for Senegal instead. The powerful 25-year-old has signed a new contract with Reading which will keep him at the English Premiership side until 2010.
He was born in Bignona, Senegal, but grew up in France and played junior football at St Etienne and Grenoble.
But the defender had to settle for Brentford as his first senior English club, playing 80 league games before moving to Reading two years ago, where he as been outstanding for the Premiership newcomers this season.
He is still eligible to play for France but Senegal have tried to recruit him on several occasions and he told the Reading Evening Post: "I still haven't decided who I will play for.
"I am not just waiting for France. If Senegal call me I would probably play for them now. I've never ruled them out.
"I have been saying `no' in the past but I was always waiting for the right time.
"I wanted to be settled with Reading in the Premiership, but I now think I am ready to take my career a step forward."
