Kenya's league 'has been unified'

Kenyan football has been plagued by problems in recent years
Kenya's two parallel leagues have been scrapped, according to the secretary-general of the Kenya Football Federation (KFF), Dan Omino.

This follows a meeting held on Monday in response to an ultimatum by Sports Minister Maina Kamanda who had warned of "stern action" should the clubs not revert to a unified league by Tuesday.

"The league has now been unified," Omino told BBC Sport on Tuesday, saying that the new championship would kick off on the weekend of Saturday 14 October.

The two competing leagues were the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and one organised by the KFF.

In January, a meeting of KFF, Fifa, Caf and government officials handed the KPL the mandate to run the Premier League.

However, the KFF has since created its own league, arguing that the KPL's mandate came to an end after the season's end.

Both the KPL and the KFF started new leagues last month, earning a firm rebuke from Fifa chief Sepp Blatter who warned Kenya to sort out this problem, amongst others, by 18 October.

Yet the troubles have not ended.

Several leading clubs, including Tusker, Thika United and Mathare United, have opposed the inclusion of a number of clubs in the new league.

The likes of Tusker and Mathare claim that the teams relegated from the KPL - namely Gor Mahia, Shabana and AFC Leopards - should not be part of the new unified division.

"The KFF didn't run last season's league but the KPL, so how can the KFF decide on the number of teams in the new league?" said Gerald Chege, vice-chairman of Thika United.

"The most painful part is the inclusion of the relegated teams. We must observe the rules and if teams are relegated, they should not be re-instated through the back door."

Despite the agreement reached with Fifa in January, Omino claimed that the KPL had no powers to relegate clubs.
