Mourinho is hoping to develop the Nigerian |
Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi will start training with new club Chelsea on 17 July. Obi, who moved to Chelsea in a $29 million deal, at the end of a transfer dispute involving Manchester United and Lyn Oslo, will work alongside the players not going to the World Cup finals.
"My next target is to start playing again. I've not been playing for a long time but I've been doing my thing to keep fit," Obi told Chelsea's website.
"I think I'm pretty fit but we'll have to see in a match situation.
"It's been a really, really difficult time for me, but I'm really happy the way everything is going now.
"I'm a midfielder player who just wants to go in there and do my stuff.
"I'm not a defensive player, I like making the team play, get into the game, keep moving around, keeping looking for the ball and make sure the team plays well."
But Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who has described the player as "fantastic", said developing the player's defensive skills would be a priority.
"We can teach him to be more complete, to defend better, and to get more intensity in the game," said Mourinho.
"He's bright in the way he thinks football, technically he's fantastic, and it's just a point to get the intensity of the English game.
"He was without playing and training for a long, long time, it's not easy, but we look forward to helping him."
