Ahly's Emad Moteab slips past a FAR Rabat opponent |
African champions Ahly of Egypt won the Super Cup on Friday when they defeated Morocco's FAR Rabat on penalties in Cairo.
The victory will bring back memories of Egypt's Nations Cup triumph, which was also achieved in the Cairo International Stadium via penalties after extra-time had ended goalless.
Goalkeeper Essam Al Hadary was a common link as well, proving himself the hero in the Super Cup just as he had been during the Nations Cup final.
Al Hadary saved two kicks during the shoot-out which Ahly won 4-2, with Islam Elshater converting the winning spot-kick.
The final provided poor spectacle during normal time, and only really warmed up as extra-time neared its end.
Egypt international Emad Moteab could have won the game after 114 minutes but fired over the crossbar from close-range when in front of goal.
Just a few minutes later, FAR had the chance to wrap up the game themselves but Al Hadary pulled off a terrific save during a goalmouth scramble.
Although he tipped the ball around the post, many people inside the stadium thought the ball had gone into the net.
A crowd of 40,000 was present in the Cairo International Stadium for the clash between the 2005 African champions and last year's Confederation Cup winners from Morocco.
