 Amoah scored a brilliant goal for Ghana |
Ghana played themselves back into contention for a quarter-final place with a hard-fought win over Senegal in match that saw two players red carded. Senegal's Habib Beye and the Black Stars' Laryea Kingston were sent-off after an off-the-ball altercation.
Matthew Amoah scored Ghana's winner with a brilliant strike from close to the byeline that flew between Senegal's goalkeeper and the near post.
Emmanuel Pappoe hit the crossbar for the Black Stars with a looping header.
After two games apiece of their African Cup of Nations Group D campaign, both teams have three points, with Senegal yet to play Nigeria and Ghana facing Zimbabwe.
Ghana lost to Nigeria in their opening game but produced a much-improved performance.
The Black Stars were without the injured Sammy Kuffour, but John Mensah was brilliant defensively, especially in the opening half.
And in Amoah they had a player who scored a goal worthy of winning any game.
Amoah, who was partnered up front by Enyimba's Joetex Frimpong, lost his marker from a John Paintsil throw-in before brilliantly finishing from an acute angle.
Tempers boiled over after 62 minutes when Beye tangled with Kingston.
The Ghana midfielder fell to the floor holding his face, though replays suggested Beye had only pushed him in the chest.
The Teranga Lions' best chance fell to substitute Pape Bouba Diop, but he failed to head home a corner after Black Stars keeper Sammy Adjei missed the ball.
Ghana still looked to push forward when possible and Stephen Appiah put Amoah through but the striker missed the target.
Senegal coach Abdoulaye Sarr:
"Ghana were better organised. They were also highly motivated. This was not the case with my team.
"But we will do our best to ensure we beat Nigeria in our last game and qualify for the quarter-final.
Ghana coach Ratomir Dujkovic:
"We played differently from the game against Nigeria because we did not have any option but to win.
"We played with more strikers but at the same time, my fullbacks did not join the attack that often like they did against Nigeria because we know Senegal have some quick and excellent strikers."
