South Africa's Steven Pienaar will join Borussia Dortmund at the start of next season on a three-year contract. Pienaar joins the German first division club from Dutch side Ajax.
The 23-year-old, whose Ajax contract ran until the end of the season, had also attracted interest from Manchester City.
The midfielder has won 14 caps for South Africa, but has not been included in their squad for the upcoming African Cup of Nations.
"We're lucky to get a player of this quality, who has at his age acquired a lot of international experience in the Champions League and international games," Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc said.
Pienaar is expected to replace Czech playmaker Tomas Rosicky, who recently said he wanted to leave the 1997 European Champions League winners.
The South African is Dortmund's second recent recruit from the Netherlands following the acquisition of Ghana's Matthew Amoah from Vitesse Arnhem.
