Talal El Karkouri's own goal sent Tunisia to Germany |
Tunisia qualified for their third successive World Cup finals after a 2-2 draw against Morocco on Saturday. A 16th minute penalty converted by Jose Clayton and an own goal from Talal El Karkouri ensured the African champions secured the final African place at Germany 2006.
But it was the Moroccans that opened scoring in the fourth minute, as an unmarked Maroune Chamakh hit home from close range.
Badr El Kaddouri intercepted Hatem Trabelsi's short pass to Karim Hagui and crossed it to Chamakh in the penalty box.
With 60,000 fans cheering them on at the Rades Stadium, Tunisia pressed forward for the equaliser and were rewarded with a penalty in the 18th minute, which Jose Clayton converted.
Chamakh restored the Moroccan lead two minutes before the end of the first half and put the Atlas Lions in the frame for their first World Cup finals since 1998.
But the Moroccans put Tunisia back on course for the World Cup when Talal El Karkouri collided with his own goalkeeper and scored an own goal in the 69th minute.
Although Morocco failed to win in Tunis, they remain the only side in the African qualifying series to remain unbeaten in the group stages.
In the other Group Five games played on Saturday, Malawi beat Kenya 3-0 in Blantyre, while Guinea - already qualified for next year's Cup of Nations beat Botswana 2-1.
