Akwa struck perhaps the most important goal in Angolan history |
The man who fired Angola into their first ever World Cup finals was overcome with emotion after the 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali. The Palancas Negras topped Group Four after Fabrice Akwa struck a late winner for his side.
"I don't know what to say - it's fantastic," he told BBC Sport after his historic header.
"It's amazing to qualify for the first time and I don't know how to express my emotions.
"It's fantastic, not just because of my goal, but because we did great."
Rwanda defended strongly during the match, only conceded the goal in the last ten minutes, and Akwa admitted he was worried his side were going to miss their chance and allow Nigeria in through the back door.
"It was a difficult game," he explained.
"But I kept believing, working hard and kept trying to score.
"I had one or two chances: one of them was a really good chance and I scored.
"For all those people in Angola, it's just amazing."
Looking ahead to the finals in Germany next year, the Qatar-based striker knows the World Cup is going to be very tough for Angola.
However, he's looking forward to performing for his country on the sport's greatest stage and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Brazil, Argentina and hosts Germany.
"We're going to the World Cup knowing that we will not win the tournament because there are a lot of great football nations there," Akwa conceded.
"But we've made it and we can prove in Germany that Angolan football is strong."
Angola top Group Four with 21 points, the same as Nigeria, but the Palancas Negras qualify thanks to a superior head-to-head record against the Super Eagles.
