Adebayor scored Togo's second goal |
Togo's Hawks have qualified for their maiden World Cup finals after beating Congo 3-2 in their final Group One game in Brazzaville. The win gave the West Africans the top spot in Group One with a total of 23 points.
A goal from Sheyi Adebayor and a brace from Maman Abdoulaye gave the Hawks the sole World Cup spot ahead of 2002 World Cup quarter-finalists Senegal.
But the Congolese were the ones that opened scoring, as Mamouna Ossila hit the target in the 25th minute.
Adebayor, who had vowed to play the 'match of his life' for the Togolese, levelled scores in the 38th minute.
Ossila put Congo back into the lead in the 50th minute.
But the determined Togolese continued to press for an equaliser and got one 11 minutes later, when Abdoulaye scored the first of his two goals.
A draw would have been enough for Togo to earn their maiden World Cup berth but Abdoulaye hit his second just before the game ended.
The result in Brazzaville ensured that Senegal's 3-0 victory over Mali in Dakar could not change the group standings.
Zambia had beaten Liberia 5-0 in the rescheduled World Cup qualifier which had been played on 1 October.
