Zamalek have used four venues in this year's Champions League |
The Military Stadium in Cairo has been picked to host the first-leg of the African Champions League semi-final between arch-rivals Zamalek and Ahly. Caf were informed on Thursday of the venue for Sunday's game, which is expected to be a tense encounter, given the history between the two sides.
Zamalek had initially planned to move the game to the Seka Hadeed stadium in Cairo or the Ismaili club stadium in Ismailia, due to the fact that the Cairo International stadium, normally used for such games, is being renovated ahead of next year's African Cup of Nations tournament.
But the request for both venues was turned down by the local security authorities.
Although the Military Stadium is also being renovated for the Cup of Nations, Zamalek President Mortada Mansour said he received approval from the Egyptian defence ministry, owners of the ground, to use it for the Cairo derby.
Although Zamalek, who are regarded as the 'home team' for the Sunday's first-leg, requires Ahly's agreement on the new venue, Khaled Mortagy, a board member of Ahly, told BBC Sport that his club will not reject the Military Stadium as a venue. The Military Stadium will be Zamalek's fourth 'home' venue during this year's Champions League campaign.
They hosted their group opener against Tunisia's Etoile Sahel in the El Giesh stadium and played Esperance at the Arab Contractors stadium.
Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast played their Group B game at the Seka Hadeed stadium.
