Youssoufou Samiou died after an attack near the El Dorado hotel |
African Youth Championship organisers have admitted the area of Cotonou where Youssoufou Samiou was attacked is notorious for its poor security.
Samiou, the Benin under-20 goalkeeper, died on Monday following the attack on the beach near the El Dorado hotel where the Benin under-20 team were staying during the tournament.
"We knew El Dorado presented a security risk," said Lieutenant Colonel Sebastien Ametepe, the chairman of the local organising committee.
"What we feared most were physical attacks from outsiders, that's why the boys were warned not to venture out at night."
However Ametepe said that the team's French coach Serge Deveze had chosen the hotel.
Ametepe went onto explain that the team moved to the El Dorado from another hotel because the squad were being continually disturbed by friends, family and fans.
He pointed out that the Moroccan under-20 squad were also staying at the El Dorado.
However Ametepe stopped short of blaming Samiou himself for the attack.
Police have so far arrested a 30-year old male suspect and are looking for 2 other suspects in connection with the attack.
