McCarthy slams Porto's racists
Porto's South African striker Benni McCarthy

Porto's South African striker Benni McCarthy has spoken out against his own fans who racially taunted two Chelsea players during Tuesday's Champions League clash.

Porto beat Chelsea 2-1 to clinch a place alongside the English club in the knockout phase of the competition, thanks to a late goal from McCarthy himself.

But the game was marred by a minority of Porto fans who derided both Ivorian striker Didier Drogba and French defender William Gallas with 'monkey' chants.

An angry McCarthy slammed the actions of his own supporters as "stupid".

McCarthy said: "In this life, people have to grow up a little bit of it and I don't see why people make those kind of noises.

"They do it to one black player but our team also has black players so we feel it too.

"People need to be more mature and think about these issues. We all want a better world and these things can start on the football field.

"We should show respect for all people whether they are a black guy, a white guy, Indian, yellow or blue or whatever."

McCarthy, who won the Uefa Champions League with Porto in May, was particularly angry that his own club's supporters could behave in such fashion.

"I take offence as well and am no different from Drogba or any other black player," he explained.

We should respect all people whether they are black, white, Indian, yellow or blue or whatever."

"If they make those remarks to other black players, they make them to me as well.

"I'm not a white man, don't they understand?

"There are a lot of stupid people at Porto but if we make a big deal out of it things will get even worse.

"I just try to forget about it and play like it doesn't exist. I'm not going to stress myself over these stupid people."

The latest incident comes after Barcelona's Cameroon forward Samuel Eto'o was a target in Spain, while other compatriots of the African Footballer of the Year have also been abused.

Pierre Boya of Partizan Belgrade was abused by Lazio fans, while Patrice Abanda of Czech first division side Drnovice is unhappy with the country's anti-racism campaign.
