Dr Kofi Amoah's committee will prepare the 2008 Nations Cup in Ghana |
Ghana has established a thirteen-man Local Organising Committee (Loc) to help prepare for the 2008 African Cup of Nations, which the country is due to host.
The committee is headed by Ghana Football Association (GFA) management member Dr Kofi Amoah, who led the bid to host the tournament and is now chairman of the Loc.
Ghana's Minister of Sports, Kwadwo Baah Wiredu, said the committee's main task will be to ensure that the country is ready to host the rest of the continent in fine fashion in 2008.
The West African country beat Libya to the right to host the event in July.
However, there are worries among senior football figures that work is yet to start on the construction of two new stadiums in Sekondi and Tamale, as well as the refurbishment of grounds in Accra and Kumasi.
Dr Amoah described the schedule as very tight but said the immense benefits of hosting the tournament should inspire the committee to meet its targets.
"This is an exercise to showcase our nation to the world and to put it in the best possible light," he said.
"Given the benefits involved, we can't fail."
Ghana's Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, who inaugurated the committee, said it is important the Loc gets down to work to avoid potentially embarrassing last-minute rushes to meet deadlines for the event.
