Indomitable Zamalek

Undefeated in 51 league games in nearly two years, Zamalek have set an enviable record in Egyptian football history.

Since a 2-1 defeat to Haras El Hodood on 8 November 2002, the league champions have created an aura of invincibility that its opponents have been unable to penetrate.

Zamalek have won 39 games and drawn 12, scoring 110 goals and conceding only 33.

"This is the golden era of our club," said club president Kamal Darweesh.

"We have won 11 trophies in the past four years, including two African titles."

Three coaches have led the team on this remarkable journey - Brazilian Carlos Cabral, who guided the club to their last African title in 2002, Portuguese Neilo Vingada and Serbian Dragoslav Stepanovic.

Stepanovic, who took charge of the club at the beginning of the season, has been in charge for the last five matches leading up to the record.

Captain Hazem Emam believes the club is worthy of the record-breaking feat.

"We have the best players in the country and the spirit in the dressing room has always been great," Emam said.

Other players who have been key in Zamalek's achievement include Abdel Wahed El Sayed, Tarek El Sayed, Tamer Abdel Hamid, Abdel Halim Ali, and the Hassan twins - Ibrahim and Hossam.

Defender Bechir El Tabei, who recently moved to Turkey, also played an important role.

"We started building this squad in 1998 and it was time to harvest the fruit of our efforts and plans," club spokesman Ashraf Sobhy told BBC Sport.

"We did not sack a coach in the last three seasons and have supported our players all the way."

Zamalek have dropped four points from their first five games this season and many supporters feel that the departure of El Tabei and the Hassan twins has been responsible for the team's dip in form.

But Sobhy, well aware that the unbeaten record could end at any moment, is undisturbed by the supporters fears.

"Even if we do not continue our unbeaten streak, we know that we are heading in the right direction.

"However, we need to refresh our squad to continue our successful campaign," he said.
