Canon Yaounde failed to make home advantage count |
Canon Yaounde came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw at home to South Africa's Santos FC in the Confederations Cup.
The result leaves Canon with an uphill battle if they are to reach the group stage of the competition, especially since their performance was so poor.
Yet despite Canon's poor display, Santos took the lead against the run of play when Tyron Arendse capitalised on a poor backpass to fire home the opener after 27 minutes.
But ten minutes later, Samuel Inogue's aimless punt took Santos goalkeeper Ryan West by surprise as it looped into the net from some 35 yards out.
At this point, Canon appeared to form the belief that West was a weakness in the South Africa side yet the Yaounde team's lack of quality prevented them from testing the keeper.
As a poor game livened up in the second half, Canon were left to rue a series of missed chances which would have made the second leg in a fortnight an easier task.
With just three minutes to go, forward Ferdinand Maemble headed over the cross bar when he had the entire goal at his mercy from short range.
Maemble's striking partner Elvis Mokake then proved the guilty party as he fired straight into West's midriff with the clock approaching 90 minutes.
In a storming finish to the match, Santos' Jean-Marc Ithier threw away a chance to wrap up victory when his 18-yard strike went narrowly off target in stoppage time.
