Turmoil in Zimbabwe

Chairman of the Zimbabwe Football Association Rafiq Khan
The Zifa council passed a no-confidence vote in Rafiq Khan

The Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) is in the grips of another power struggle with its council passing a vote of no-confidence in chairman Rafiq Khan and his executive.

The Zifa council has appointed an interim executive led by Leonard Nkala, and if the move does go ahead he will become the association's fifth chairman in the space of 18 months.

Leo Mugabe and Vincent Pamire also suffered no-confidence votes by the Zifa council, the game's supreme decision-making body.

Khan's executive is accused of bringing the game into disrepute by failing to hold council meetings and lack of financial transparency.

"The board has failed to honour the constitution in not holding an annual general meeting by March," said Benedict Moyo, who chaired the meeting.

"They haven't come to us for approval of their budget, and some workers have lost their jobs without our consultation.

"When the board snubbed the meeting it was the last straw, and the 30 councillors at the meeting all agreed that the board should go because they have failed in their duty."

However, Khan was still representing Zifa at Sunday's match between Zimbabwe and Algeria, and says that the council's decision was "unconstitutional and stupid".

Last November Khan won elections held at the insistence of Fifa, as rival factions led by Pamire and Charles Westerfall were vying for power.

There is also a battle for power in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), where Leslie Gwindi became chairman a week ago.

The elections were nullified by Khan's executive, but the Zifa council has accepted the results, and has made Gwindi part of the new four-man Zifa interim leadership.
