Zimbabwe's Tinashe Nengomasha was named as both South Africa's Footballer of the Year and the Players' Player of the Year in Johannesburg on Thursday. The 21-year-old international midfielder pipped his veteran colleague John Moshoeu to both awards after playing a major role in the success of Kaizer Chiefs, who won their first league championship in 12 years.
Nengomasha, who is expected to play in Zimbabwe's World Cup qualifier against Algeria on Sunday, was on hand to pick up his awards at the ceremony.
He walked home with $22,000 in prize money and the real possibility of following previous winners in forging a European club football career.
Chiefs coach Ted Dumitru, originally from Romania, was named as the Coach of the Season for his role in returning the club to the winners' podium.
Nengomasha is the fourth foreigner to win the award in South Africa, after Ernest Mtawali of Malawi, Wilfred Mugeyi of Zimbabwe and the Nigerian international striker Chukwu Ndukwe.
