Ayegbeni will concentrate on his career in the English Premiership

Nigeria's Yakubu Ayegbeni insists he will not be forced into making an apology for his conduct at the African Cup of Nations.

The England-based striker was expelled from the Super Eagles squad, along with Celestine Babayaro and Victor Agali for violating camp rules.

But in a recent television interview, Ayegbeni criticised the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) for punishing him for an offence he still claims never happened.

"I don't have to say sorry because we did not do anything wrong.

"All sorts of stories were told [about what happened in Tunisia]. They said we went to nightclubs and some said we brought girls into our rooms.

"We never went out and we never took any girls to our rooms.

"The girls that were said to be involved were in the lobby of our hotel," Ayegbeni insisted.

He said the three players retired to their rooms within the time permitted under camp rules.

"We went back to our rooms at about 10.30 pm and NFA secretary Ogunjobi and coach Christian Chukwu knocked on our doors at 2.30am and said we were not in our rooms.

"We were shocked when we were decamped the next day and asked to leave."

The 22-year-old, who has been in good form for his English side Portsmouth this season, had strong words for Ogunjobi.

"The so-called secretary-general was bad to us. If we were his sons, he would never have treated us like that."

Ayegbeni said the treatment he received at the Cup of Nations has forced him to retire from international football and focus on his club career.

"I have quit the national team for now. They should count me out of anything they are doing.

"I have made up my mind and spoken to my family and they're behind me," he said.
