Musa Otieno got Santos's opener |
Veteran striker Jean-Marc Ithier grabbed a dramatic goal eight minutes from the end of time to ensure a 3-2 aggregate win for Santos of South Africa over Ghana's King Faisal Babes in the Confederations Cup third round in Cape Town on Sunday. Kenya centre back Musa Otieno, who captained the Harambee Stars at the African Nations Cup finals in Tunisia earlier this year, stabbed home the game's opening goal after just five minutes.
He pounced at the end of a goalmouth melee when visiting goalkeeper Mohamed Suraju spilt the ball.
But Eric Gawu equalised for Babes in the 70th minute after intercepting a weak pass by Santos substitute Durban Francis, and neatly slotting ball past the goalkeeper.
But the lead lasted just 12 minutes before Santos' pressure finally paid dividends with Otieno's tall frame make a nuisance in the penalty area and when Babes' defence failed to clear, Ithier hammered the ball home from close range to restore the lead.
In results earlier in the weekend, Zambia's Green Buffaloes beat Lobi Stars of Nigeria 4-2 to go through 5-4 on aggregate.
Noel Mwanbila, Clive Hanchilensa, Jimmy Mumba and Kunda Mushota all scored for the home side.
Meanwhile, Morocco's Wydad Casablanca defeated Ivorian side Stella Abidjan 2-1 at home to go through by the same score on aggregate.
AS Douanes of Senegal were a western African side with more success, and knocked Cameroonians PWD Bamenda out 5-2 on aggregate following a 3-0 win in Rufisque.
