Asec Abidjan were unbeaten in the 2003/4 Ivory Coast season |
Asec Abidjan have completed the 2003/4 Ivorian league season without losing a single game.
During the 26-match season the 'Yellow and Blacks' won 21 times and were held to just five draws.
Fittingly, they finished with a win, an easy 2-0 win over Stade d'Abidjan, thanks to goals from Vincent Foneye Die and Emmanuel Kone.
Asec look down on their nearest challengers from a great height: their 68 point haul is 23 ahead of rivals Africa Sports.
Asec's fifth straight title was clinched at the beginning of September when Africa Sports were deducted six points for failing to pay the wages of two previous coaches.
Despite the unbeaten season and a fifth straight championship the Asec president, Roger Ouegnin, is not as ecstatic as you would expect.
"Asec has nothing left to prove on the local scene," he said.
"We only think about international competitions, because winning the national championship is a habit."
The unbeaten season provokes memories of Asec's incredible world record unbeaten run of 105 games between 1989 and 1994.
It also confirms Asec's superiority over great rivals Africa Sports.
Roger Ouegnin's brother Francis, a club vice president, drove the point home forcibly.
"We could have won this championship playing on one leg!
"I don't consider Africa to be on the same level as Asec, we are a century ahead of them.
"We are unstoppable," he concluded.
Asec goalkeeper Stephane Dimy was happy to point out he had only conceded five goals in the 26 games, a phenomenal defensive record.
However, despite going unbeaten in the league, Asec's season will probably be considered a mild failure.
The 1998 African champions were knocked out of the Champions League before the lucrative group stages.
