Four people have been confirmed dead following the stampede after Togo's 2006 World Cup qualifier in Lome against Mali on Sunday. The stampede happened as fans panicked when the lights went out just minutes after the game ended.
First reports said three people had died but the Minister for Health Sussanne Aho Assouma reported after a visit to the disaster victims at Lome's central hospital that the death toll had risen to four.
She also confirmed that among the deceased was a Malian who lived in Lome.
Assouma said three of those injured in the stampede and who were in a critical condition, have now been transferred to the Military Wing of the Lome central hospital on the orders of the president.
While five other people who were injured have already been treated and discharged.
In reaction to the disaster the Togolese President, Gnassingbe Eyadema, has ordered a Committee of Enquiry to investigate the cause of the black out.
He has also release of funds to help the families of the deceased as well as those injured at the stadium.
The committee was set up at an Extraordinary Ministerial Council meeting held early this morning in Lome before the president left for Niger to attend a meeting.
The council meeting also sent out a ministerial delegation to express condolences to the families of the bereaved.
