Dim draw for Zam and Zim
Sunday Marimo
Zimbabwe coach Sunday Marimo said he was pleased with the result
Zimbabwe and Zambia continued their preparations for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers with a dull goalless draw in a friendly match in Harare.

The two teams drew 1-1 a fortnight ago in Lusaka.

Both coaches fielded experimental sides consisting of locally-based players, with the exception of two Zambians who play in Zimbabwe's premier league.

The best chance of the game came in the 82nd minute when Zimbabwe goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini made a superb reflex save from close range from the outstanding Songwe Chalwe.

The Warriors had plenty of opportunities but strikers Brian Badza, Malvern Nyakabangwe and substitute Sageby Sandaka all failed to find the target.

Only five members of the Zimbabwe team had featured at the Nations Cup finals in Tunisia, while four Zambians made their senior team debuts, including 19-year-old Felix Katongo.

"I'm pleased we didn't concede a goal, as we were trying out some youngsters," said Zimbabwe coach Sunday Marimo.

"Zambia always seem to be better than us, and they were today."

Chipolopolo coach Ben Bamfuchile also felt that the game was a useful exercise in assessing fringe players.

"It was helpful for these youngsters to have to contain the pressure in the first half," he said.

"With away games against Mali and Senegal coming up, I'll be happy if we can defend the way we did today."

Zambia begin their World Cup campaign with a home fixture against Togo, and have friendlies against Malawi and Sudan lined up beforehand.

Zimbabwe will play Egypt in a friendly on 24 May before their opening World Cup qualifier away to Gabon on 5 June.
