Ivory Coast and Anderlecht's Aruna Dindane has won two awards in 2004 |
The Ivory Coast and Anderlecht striker Aruna Dindane has been named as Players' Player of the Year in Belgium. The Ivorian international secured 448 points from the votes cast by Belgium's first division players.
The award caps a great season for the 23-year-old who has helped Anderlecht win their 27th Belgian league title.
Dindane is the club's top scorer this season with 14 goals so far and also grabbed 4 in Anderlecht's European Champions League campaign.
The award is Dindane's second this year after he received the Golden Shoe prize earlier in the season to become the first ever African to win the honour.
He is the second Ivorian to be honoured in Europe this season after Marseille's Didier Drogba was recently named France's Player of the Year.
His 18-year-old team mate Vincent Kompany, who has roots in the DR Congo, finished second with 233 points.
Kompany, who has been linked with moves to English Premiership sides Manchester United and Chelsea, was recently awarded the Ebony Boot.
The prize is awarded to the best African football player (or football player of African origin) in Belgium.
Kompany beat off competition from Dindane, Tosin Dosunmu, Emile and Mbo Mpenza for the Ebony Boot.
The award, won by Dindane in 2003, is voted for by the national coach, the coaches of clubs in the top three leagues, the Belgian press and a special jury have cast their votes.
The Players' Player of the Year elections are organised by the Belgian Professional Football League and Sport-Foot Magazine.
