Fifa backs ousted Kenya federation

The Kenya football team
The Kenya team could be withdrawn from the 2006 World Cup qualifiers

Football's world governing body Fifa say they still recognise the ousted Kenya Football Federation (KFF) executive committee.

Fifa's stance is based on a five-page report compiled by their representatives Joseph Mifsud and Ishmael Taha after a fact-finding mission to Kenya last month

The report gives KFF chairman Maina Kariuki the authority to handle all Kenyan correspondence with Fifa, "especially anything the regarding the participation of Kenya in the qualification for the 2006 Fifa World Cup in Germany."

The report goes on to say the world body will "continue to follow the statutory path between the Fifa Administration and the KFF General Secretariat."

On the strength of the report, the KFF secretary-general Hussein Swaleh has now written to Sports Minister Najib Balala.

He has threatened to pull the Harambee Stars out of the 2006 qualifiers if the problems between the KFF and the Sports Ministry are not resolved by 11May.

Part of his letter read: "While we appreciate your desire to promote football in the country, we strongly believe the way forward to achieve your goal is through dialogue.

"I would like to inform you that if the problems between the KFF and your Ministry is not resolved by 11 May, we shall be forced to withdraw the Harambee Stars from the 2006 World Cup and Africa Cup of Nation qualifying campaign.

"Fifa and Caf will expect us to communicate with Guinea, referees and match commissioners to let them know if the match is to go ahead as planned."

The government and the KFF are at loggerheads over allegations of financial impropriety and mismanagement levelled at Swaleh's administration.
