Martins said he will honour Nigeria's call-up |
Obafemi Martins says he is ready to make his debut for Nigeria at the forthcoming Unity Cup tournament in London.
The 19-year-old Inter Milan forward was invited by manager Christian Chukwu to participate in the three-nation tournament, also featuring the Republic of Ireland and Jamaica.
Martins - recently named Africa's Young Player of the Year - turned down the chance to play for the Super Eagles at the African Nations Cup finals in Tunisia.
He claimed that his Italian Serie A commitments with Inter Milan made it impossible for him to spend a month with the national team.
Although he declared his willingness to play in Nigeria's final Olympic qualifier against Tunisia, Martins was refused permission by Inter.
The Italian giants took advantage of the fact that the match was not protected by Fifa's unified international calendar.
Obafemi told BBC Sport that he is ready to make his first appearance at the Unity Cup tournament in London later this month.
"Although I've heard that I've been called up to play in the tournament, I 've not received any formal letter from the Nigeria Football Association.
"But when it does come, I'm ready to play for my country.
"I have no other country but Nigeria," he added.
Martins has scored 11 goals in Italian and European competitions for Inter this season.
