Schaefer turns to politics
Cameroon coach Winfried Schaefer
Cameroon coach Winfried Schaefer wants to get into politics in Germany
Cameroon's coach Winfried Schaefer wants to get involved in politics in his German homeland.

The Indomitable Lions boss is applying for a seat on the district council of the city of Ettlingen in south western Germany, where he has lived for 20 years.

But the 54-year-old former Karslruhe and VfB Stuttgart coach has insisted that getting involved in local politics will not have a negative impact on his role as Cameroon boss.

"A seat on the district council isn't a full-time post, everyone else has to work too," he said.

Schaefer's decision comes despite his recent announcement that he had taken up residence in the Cameroon capital Yaounde.

Schaefer was pressured by the government to start living in the country as stipulated in his contract.

Government officials and the local media had criticised the coach for spending most of his time in Europe, who had argued he needed to monitor the performances of the Cameroon players based overseas.

Schaefer was blamed for Cameroon's failure to retain their African Cup of Nations title in Tunisia, after they lost to Nigeria in the quarter-finals.
