Egypt recall Hossam Hassan
By Amr Shaheen

Hossam Hassan

Veteran Hossam Hassan has been recalled to the Egypt squad for the first time in two years.

The 37-year-old is one of twenty players selected by Pharaohs caretaker coach Fathy Mabrouk for the friendly against Trinidad and Tobago on 31 March.

Hassan, who is the most capped footballer in Africa, has earned his first call-up since the 2002 Nations Cup following a series of impressive performances for Zamalek.

The Cairo giants currently top the Egyptian league, with Hassan having scored winning goals in two recent matches for the club.

The veteran striker made his international debut against Norway in Oslo in September 1985 and has won 150 caps since.

Against Trinidad and Tobago, he will thus be able to extend his record African tally of 151 caps.

One big name missing from Mabrouk's 20-man squad is Hassan's club colleague Hazem Emam.

The playmaker, who was mostly used as a substitute at Tunisia 2004 by former Pharaohs boss Mohsen Salah, has been dropped by Mabrouk.

Not one Europe-based Egyptian makes Mabrouk's list of players since the caretaker coach has expressed his desire to concentrate on local players for the moment.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian FA confirmed on Wednesday that the Pharaohs' new foreign coach will be revealed later today.

Speculation in the local media has linked Italy's 1982 World Cup winner Marco Tardelli with the vacant post.

Yet Mabrouk will definitely take charge for the game against Trinidad and Tobago, with the new coach expected to watch from the stands before assuming full control of the Pharaohs on 1 April.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Essam El Hadary (Al Ahly), Abdelwahed ElSayed (Zamalek)

Defence: Tarek El Sayed (Zamalek), Ahmed El Sayed, Wael Gomaa, Ahmed Abo-Mosallem (all Al Ahly), Osama Hassan (ENPPI), Ahmed Fathy and Moatasem Salem (both Ismaily)

Midfield: Tamer Abdel Hamid, Tarek El Saeed (both Zamalek), Hassan Mustafa, Mohamed Shawky, Mohamed Abou-Treika (all Al Ahly), Hosni Abd-Rabo, Mohamed Abdallah (both Ismaily)

Forwards: Amr Zaki (ENPPI), Hossam Hassan, Abdel-Halim Ali (both Zamalek), Osama Hosny (Al Ahly).
