 Jordaan suggests radical plan |
Danny Jordaan, the Chief Executive Officer of the South Africa World Cup bid committee wants Caf to delay the 2010 Nations Cup finals by 12 months. Jordaan made his comments in Yaounde during a memorial ceremony for Marc-Vivien Foe, which was attended by African football legends.
In a World Cup year, the Nations Cup is organized earlier. But Jordaan says one way to help an African team win the 2010 World Cup - taking place in the continent for the first time - is to play the Nations Cup a year late in 2011.
"African players play too many games in the year when they have both the World Cup and the Nations Cup," Jordaan said.
"After giving their all in the Nations Cup, they appear very tired in the World Cup. "That is why no team that has won the Nations Cup has ever performed well in the World Cup of the same year."
Jordaan's suggestion is in line with the principle of the bid committee that Africa should not only host the 2010 World Cup, but that the host nation should also encourage an African team wins.
"We have noticed that most World Cups have been won by teams from the hosting continent, so this should also happen in Africa when we host the event for the first time in the history of world football."
Jordaan also mentioned other benefits he wanted Africa to get as World Cup host.
"One other thing that should come out of the World Cup in Africa should be world class administrators to promote and develop the game on the continent.
"Caf must begin building that capacity from now until 2010 so that such people, including other personnel in the football business, will participate in organizing a successful World Cup in Africa.
"Africa can not host the World Cup, but get other persons from other continents come and organize it for us because of lack of qualified personnel."
