Kenyan defender George Waweru will be out of football for three months after doctors in Tunisia confirmed he has a fractured neck. The extent of the injury came to light after the Harambee Stars' opening game against Mali.
He spent two nights in hospital and is due to return to the squad but plays no further part in the tournament.
It seems the 25-year-old defender initially injured himself in a training session in Nairobi prior to the tournament and then aggravated it further in the match against Mali.
Speaking exclusively to BBC Sport in Bizerte, Kenya coach Jacob Mulee explained Waweru's situation.
"He got an elbow in the head early on and at half-time he was ok, but then he made it worse when he headed the ball in the second half," Mulee said.
Waweru was able to continue playing and finished the game, but was then rushed 60 kilometres to Tunis for a scan.
Medical checks revealed that not only that he had fractured his neck, but that there was evidence of another injury in the same area which had now healed.
Its believed the original injury occurred when Waweru was mugged by thieves in Nairobi last year.
Waweru will be replaced in the side to face Senegal by Philip Opiyo.
