SA's troubles worsen

Mauritius claimed the biggest scalp in their footballing history by beating South Africa 2-0 in the Cosafa Castle Cup in Curepipe on Saturday.

Two second half goals added to a calamitous week for South African football, which had seen the coach Shakes Mashaba suspended and more officials than players travel to the Indian Ocean island.

Further recriminations are now expected after an embarrassing result for the country, who are headed to the African Cup of Nations finals with their preparations in tatters.

An own goal by Jacob Lekgetho set Mauritius on their way to victory, with the Russia-based defender managing to turn a cross from Gilbert Bayaram into the top corner of his own net in the 53rd minute.

The Bafana-Bafana created few chances upfront where they lacked a quality striker, which will lead to renewed calls for the return of FC Porto's Benni McCarthy.

Mauritius, who cleverly frustrated their visitors with a packed midfield, not giving South Africa space in which to operate, got their second goal on the counter attack.

Christopher Perle scored with a slight deflection off debutant defender Neil Winstanley in the 81st minute to seal the win.

The victory sparked furious celebrations at the newly-refurbished George V stadium, which had been sold out three days before the match.

"It is the biggest win in our history," claimed coach Rajesh Gunesh after the game, his first in charge.

South Africa will now have to make a decision on their coach in the coming week and finalise their squad before they head to Tunisia on Friday.

They go via Senegal where they are to play a friendly on 18 January.
