Bwalya was elected unopposed after his opponent was disqualified |
Zambian legend Kalusha Bwalya has been elected as vice-president of the Football Association of Zambia (Faz) ahead of the scheduled 31 January elections.
Bwalya was elected unopposed after Marcha Chilemena, his only opponent, was disqualified on a constitutional technicality.
Chilemena had not served at club level as an administrator for five years, as demanded by Faz regulations.
"There was only one successful nomination after a thorough scrutiny of all the papers," said Paul Simukoko, Faz general secretary at a press briefing on Friday in Lusaka.
Bwalya, who is also Zambia's technical director, did not offer an immediate reaction to the development but promised to speak to the media at a press briefing on Monday.
There have been concerns from the Zambian football community on how the former African Footballer of the Year will combine the role of technical director with his Faz executive position.
Although some experts have argued that it would be improper for Bwalya to hold both posts, Simukoko is tight-lipped on the official decision that will be made on Bwalya's final status.
"The issue of Kalusha being technical director will tackled after he's formally declared as vice president," he said.
