Egypt and DR Congo both struggling to emulate Cameroon |
Egypt's under-23 team face a monumental task if they are to qualify for the Athens Olympics following a 3-1 home defeat to Tunisia on Sunday. The first half was a dull affair with both sides being very cautious and the visiting team happy to sit back and defend.
The Tunisians eventually broke the deadlock early in the second half when their captain Khaled El Molhy scored with a shot from the edge of the area.
Essam Goma headed the second goal in the 54th minute, beating the Egyptian goalkeeper in the air after a cross from the left.
The victory was guaranteed in the 70th minute when Saber Al Trabolsi dribbled through the Egyptian defence and put this shot beyond the goalkeeper.
Egypt's consolation goal was scored by the substitute Wael Reyad just eight minutes from time from the penalty spot.
This is the third successive loss for the Egyptians, after losing 0-2 to both Nigeria at home and to Senegal away.
The win gives Tunisia five points and lifts them into second place behind Senegal who have seven points, Nigeria slip to third on 4 points with Egypt bottom without a point.
Meanwhile in Group B the DR Congo lost at home 2-0 to Mali.
Both goals came in the second half with Sedibe Rasam scoring twice, in the 51st minute and again 25 minutes later.
The win lifts Mali into second place and leaves the DR Congo rooted firmly to the bottom of the table.
In Group C Ethiopia beat Angola by a goal to nil in Addis Ababa.
The home side left it very late as Abeje Yared scored the winner in the final seconds of the game.
The win lifts Ethiopia to the top of the group with six points from their three games, while Angola have four from their three matches.
The winners of each group will play at the Athens Olympics later this year.
