Enyimba fans celebrate victory in the Champions League |
Football fans all over Nigeria celebrated through the night after Enyimba beat Ismaili of Egypt to become the first Nigerian club to win the Champions League. Enyimba may have lost the second-leg by a controversial first half penalty goal but they triumphed 2-1 on aggregate, thanks to a 2-0 win at home in the first leg.
In the club's hometown of Aba their ecstatic fans toasted the hard-fought victory in the city's pubs and clubs.
"We are celebrating this great day, the Egyptians tried to intimidate us but we showed true character and this gave us the cup and we are now part of history," said Obinna Nwafor, a fan who watched the game live on television.
Former international Segun Odegbami, who came close to lifting the title in 1996 with Shooting Stars of Ibadan, said Enyimba's win will gain more respect for Nigerian club football.
"We have finally broken the jinx," he said.
"That we have never won this trophy in the past has left a big dent in our image and cost us respect in the eyes of Africa, but now Enyimba have changed all that."
The final itself was interrupted for several minutes as angry Egyptian fans threw missiles onto the pitch in the final stages of the match.
Meanwhile in Lagos, thousands of fans took to the streets after the final whistle to celebrate the new African champions.
As well a helping the profile of Nigerian club football the victory has earned Enyimba a huge financial boost as they collect $950,000 in prize money, while the NFA get $50,000.
