Musonda Mweuke has pleaded guilty to using marijuana

Musonda Mweuke, the top goalscorer in Zambia's domestic league, has confessed in court to his unlawful use of marijuana.

The Kabwe Warriors striker was arrested last week when local Drug Enforcement Commission officers caught an alleged narcotics dealer handing the 24-year-old a quantity of marijuana.

On Monday, the footballer pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful use of the drug.

Mweuke, who will discover his fate when sentencing takes place on 8 December, said he has learnt his lesson.

"It has not been a good experience," the striker told reporters after being granted bail.

"This is the end of the habit."

Mweuke, whose 18 goals made him the joint top scorer in the Zambian Super League that finished on Saturday, was arrested at a training session the day before.

Police were trailing an alleged drugs dealer - who was found to be in possession of 240 balls of marijuana - suspected of supplying Kabwe Warriors players with the drug.

Mweuke's arrest came on the same day that three other footballers in Zambia were sentenced to two-year jail terms.

But they will not go to prison, as their sentences have been suspended for 36 months.

In a bid to curb the rampant use of drugs by players, Paul Simukoko, the general secretary of the Football Association of Zambia, announced his organisation will set up a medical committee to deal with the problem.

In 2001, Zambian striker Rotson Kilambe tested positive for cannabis and became the first African player to be banned by football's world governing body Fifa.
