A series of good performances for Kaizer Chiefs has seen a growing number of fans calling for the return of veteran John 'Shoes' Moshoeu to the South African squad.

Moshoeu is not in the provisional Bafana Bafana squad of 39 for next year's Nations Cup finals in Tunisia.

The midfielder, who turn 37 in December, returned to Kaizer Chiefs last season after a spell in Turkey.

The South African premier league season may still be young but Moshoeu has started to confound critics who had already written his football obituary.

Last weekend Moshoeu won the man-of-the-match award for a typically crafty performance against Sundowns in the opening game of the season.

I feel like a 16-year-old

A key member of the 1996 Nations Cup winning team, Moshoeu told BBC Sport website that he still has ambitions of adding to his 63 caps for the national side.

"I feel I should be in the national team. It's long overdue but it's not for me to decide.

"There are many other players besides me who should also be in the squad but they've not been picked yet.

"I feel like a 16-year-old," said Moshoeu, who last donned the Bafana Bafana shirt in a friendly against Egypt in November 2001.

However, Moshoeu faces stiff competition for a position in central midfield.

Twenty-year-old Ajax Amsterdam star Steven Pienaar and Russian-based MacBeth Sibaya are virtually assured of their places in the squad.

But if Moshoeu can keep the his shoes dancing like he has done over the past few weeks he could yet force his way into contention for Tunisia 2004.
